概要
The Interpreting and Translation Unit of the Australian Embassy is seeking a highly competent and experienced interpreter/translator. The successful applicant will require superior language skills, substantial experience in high-level consecutive interpreting, research and professional writing skills and sound knowledge of international and current affairs. Familiarity with Australia desirable.
This position may require occasionally irregular working hours for interpreting at Embassy events.
About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
The key responsibilities of the position include:
- Provide high level translation and interpretation services for the Ambassador, visiting senior officials, and other Embassy staff, at meetings and high-profile events.
- Translate official government documents, internal Embassy documents, speeches, briefing and other material and provide policy analysis as required.
- Monitor and analyse Japanese media (including wire services, internet news and newspapers) for coverage relevant to Australian interests/policy, and translate, report and distribute a daily press summary for the Embassy.
- Identify and develop synergies between media monitoring and the Section’s strategic communications and advocacy responsibilities.
- Provide high level support to Australian participants at a range of forums, events and meetings and provide advice on protocol and procedural arrangements
- Develop and strengthen strategic relationships, negotiate and liaise across a broad range of stakeholders to contribute to Australian Government priorities.
- Support the Public Diplomacy Section’s communications and advocacy agenda by assisting with priority projects and campaigns as required.

- High level oral fluency and written proficiency in Japanese and English.
- Japanese language skills (minimum JLPT N1 or equivalent).
- English (above TOEIC 950 points or equivalent).
- Substantial experience in high-level consecutive interpreting. Simultaneous/whispering interpreting skills highly desirable.
- High-level understanding of the nuance and formality of diplomatic language in both Japanese and English.
- Demonstrated experience in translation of documents from Japanese to English and from English to Japanese.
- Strong knowledge and evidence of interest in international and Australian current affairs.
- Broad knowledge of the Australia-Japan bilateral policy agenda, including agriculture, economic, trade and investment, finance, resources and minerals, intelligence, security and defence, and political matters, or the ability to acquire this knowledge in a short space of time.
- Demonstrated presentation and public speaking skills.
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications that demonstrate high-level interpretation/translation skills.
- Professional level writing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Superior organisational skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and ability to complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Excellent IT skills to carry out translations.
