Summary of Duties:
Under the direction of a Canadian diplomat, the Trade Commissioner at the Embassy of Canada to Japan advances Canada’s commercial interests in Japan in the Energy sector.
The Trade Commissioner provides market advice and services to Canadian companies and organizations; facilitates connections, plans and implements initiatives in responsible sectors to promote bilateral trade and collaboration; drafts project-related documents such as briefing notes, event reports, meeting summaries, and other communication products; establishes and maintains a network of local contacts to stay abreast of sectoral developments and trends; other duties as required.
Area of Selection:
This selection process is open to all applicants eligible to work legally in Japan including all Embassy employees, spouses, and dependents of Canada-based staff, and who meet all the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Tokyo at their own expense.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.
Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.
*Language will be assessed further during the process.
Education:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, preferably with a major in a discipline related to the job requirements (e.g. commerce, sciences, business administration, public relations, international trade).
Language:
- Advanced proficiency level (reading, writing and speaking) in English
- Advanced proficiency level (reading, writing and speaking) in Japanese
Experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years of recent and direct experience in international business development and/or foreign direct investment promotion;
- Experience in providing analytical and strategic advice and support to clients;
- Experience in researching and analyzing business trends and/or industry policies; and
- Experience in preparing briefing materials or written reports to management and/or clients on business issues
RATED REQUIREMENTS
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:

- The ability to communicate effectively in French both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of and/or experience working in the Energy sector in relation to oil and gas, hydrogen/ammonia, biofuel or CCUS.
- Experience working in Canada in a relevant sector/field.
Operational Requirements:
- Working hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with a one-hour lunch break each day.
- Must be available for occasional overtime outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends)
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Conditions of Employment:
Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.
- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
